Maybe they got lost too? Or perhaps Miss Maiko figured good ridance, since Toshi never paid mind to what she was told anyway.

That gruesome possibility makes the teacher's admonition to Toshi seem unsettlingly sinister... As if she were intentionally playing "reverse-psychology" mind games on Toshi, to get her to (subconciously) react indefiance - and in so doing fall into disaster just that much quicker! O_O

She lost something on page two that might have saved her.

I always thought it would be rather hard to lose a maryjane-style shoe in deep mud, what with the instep strap keeping it from sliding off the foot and all. A flat would definitley have been sucked off, but hey, a MJ fits the schoolgirl outfit better and she had to lose something sooner or later :)

It is really rather hard to loose one, unless the buckle either snaps, or the sewing is crap. For that matter, any shoe with either an ankle or instep strap is rather hard to free from your feet in any mud. I did get into some thick clay once and did indeed loose one. If though the socks are thick enough and you have it loose enough on the strap, yeah, with a good pull and work you can get out of em. Mostly the mud just pastes them on your feet like you got a coat of glue or something. Its fun to try though! It really did add a good note to the story. This is definately one of the best muddy stories I've seen online. Cheers & Bottoms Down!

While I've not been fortunate to live in a place where one might run across any clay deposits, I've seen plenty of anecdotal evidence on YouTube that if any kind of soft ground can break the grip of a maryjane, it would be clay :)
