Flat vs. Realism/Mottled
What is the difference between a flat colored tail and a realistic colored tail?
Well, it doesn't mean that you can't have a realistic tail just because your fursona is bright green! Realism has to do with creating a mottled tail with color-blends to mimic the shades and tones seen in nature, as well as natural color patterning.
These two tails were a commission for
LakotaSilver . Lakota ordered both a flat colored tail and a realistic/mottled tail for her character--and as you can see, they are quite different!
Flat colors means that your tail will feature pure colors. The flat tail on the left, therefore, features pure black and pure yellow. This would be a good choice if you are wanting a tail to match a specific item or other furry accessory that you already own that is also flat colored, or if you want a more cartoon-like tail. These tails may have wilder fibers, however, because they are untamed by blending.
Realistic/mottled means that your tail will feature shades and tones of colors neighboring the main colors of your tail. Realistic browns and grays may also be added to create a more realistic feel. The blending of colors creates a smoother overall appearance and slightly tamed fibers due to colormixing (no single fiber is free to do just as it pleases; it must conform along with the other fibers in the blend). The epitome of realism includes "guard hairs," which are featured on the realistic tail above. Guard hairs are longer, thinner, more unwieldy-in-a-good-way fibers that can bring colors together and just in general add that extra dose of realism, as they mimic the longer fur fibers on many mammals. Tails with guard hairs feel stiffer near the base, may be slightly wider across than from the side, and require less maintenance (the guarding procedure really does 'guard' the fibers beneath--they seem to become matted much less easily).
Both are good, and I hope that Lakota enjoys her new tails immensely! Thanks for the opportunity to create a guide like this, so that everybody can see which type of tail is right for them!

All of them? : / A teensy amount coming out is totally normal, but not for all of them. As long as you aren't brushing hard, that shouldn't happen. (I in fact usually give all of mine a good tug to make sure they are in well, lol) . If you've lost a whole bunch, though, send us an email. We'll fix it up for ya if you'd like!
Oh jeez 0_o You make tails too, so I can only assume your cat must have a really sensitive sense of smell, and just the tail having been in the same house as Bir's cat and dog (because the tail wouldn't have been in direct contact, I don't think) must have freaked your cat out. Sorry to hear that! I've not heard of that happening before!
