I've wondered that myself. Although, they don't seem to have regular jobs, and are rarely seen doing things that could raise money. What if all they have is about 500 bells, and live by eating the fruit off the trees oh god that's horrible what have I done.

There's only two trees in my town left: The Town Tree and my first Perfect Orange tree.

So if they live off of the fruits: Oops!

But I did notice they often donate small amounts from 1 Bell to 249ish Bells.

Never a number that ends on a 0.
