Faolan, Akylu, Isaac, and Thardix met up with Gem, Natalie, and Tanya the next morning at 9 a.m. just outside of the abandoned daycare center. Thardix looked very nervous about this, which was unusual for him. The place was a daunting sight, for it was quiet, dark, bare, and very depressing. When the wind gusted, it carried a feel like that of a grave. Akylu shivered and sidled closer to Faolan, who placed a reassuring arm about her, comforting her. The mood was as grim as it can get. Strangely, Gem and the other two girls were not so anxious about it; in fact, they were ecstatic about it. Who knows how a girl’s mind really works?
“Well,” Gem said, breaking the chilly silence, “What are we waiting for? Let’s go in!”
Gem led the way, followed by Natalie and Tanya. Faolan, Akylu, Isaac, and Thardix exchanged uncertain and nervous glances with one another before following. As they entered, they noted the name and logo of the daycare center: Sleepy Bubbles Daycare. The logo is that of a blue bubble with closed eyes and a tiny mouth formed into a small “o”, with three z’s to one side, in the manner of the sound made by those who are asleep. Inside, the building was empty. Almost. They passed a few rooms that held some boxes in them, and a few were open, revealing toys, blankets, clothes, diapers, and other things commonly found in daycares. Thardix kept muttering nervously under his breath, cursing quietly, and occasionally making suggestions to turn back and meet up some place else. Naturally, Gem ignored him.
At last, Gem led them to a playroom. Turning to the others, she dug in the backpack she brought along for the purpose and produced a bottle of water. The bottle has no labels or descriptions. Gem then conjured seven small waxed paper cups from the bag and handed each person a cup, pouring a small amount of the liquid in each cup.
Thardix was suddenly wary. “I don’t like the looks of this…”
“Oh, just relax, Thardix!” Tanya chided. “You are taking all the fun out of it!”
“But what exactly were you trying to show or tell us?” Isaac inquired, confused.
“Gem, can you please explain to us why did you bring us here?” Faolan asked Gem.
“You’ll see,” Gem assured them. “Just after we have a little something to drink first.”
Abruptly Akylu became suspicious. “What exactly did you put in this water?”
Gem grinned, managing to appear innocent. “You’ll have to find out for yourself. Alright, on the count of three…one…two…three!”
Everyone downed their cup at the same time. For a few moments, nothing happened. Then everything changed, as the transformation began.
All of them began to shrink in their clothes, getting younger by the minute. Gem’s tail got smaller and less bushy in proportion to her shrinking body, while her claws and squirrel teeth shrank. Her ears and eyes grew large compared to the rest of her body.
“What’s happening? What is going on?” Isaac yelped, startled. His tail shrank, while his paws and muzzle did likewise. His body became a little more chubby.
“I knew this was such a bad idea!” Thardix said. His wings became smaller and smaller until they are two small for flight. His horn shrank, becoming rounder at the tip as the thin veneer of tough flesh protecting the horn covered it. When he finished shrinking, his horn was no more than three inches in length, where it had been a foot and a half in length as an adult. “I tried to warn you against it, but you didn’t listen! It’s all your fault, Gemma!”
Natalie and Tanya are having similar transformations, regressing into cubhood again. But Faolan and Akylu, being taurs, simply shrank, with only their wings being shrunk out of proportion to the rest of their bodies.
Looking down at their newly regressed forms, as they were climbing out of they now oversized adult clothings the group discovered that they all were now wearing diapers. Even Faolan and Akylu were wearing them! This came as a shock to everyone but Gem. Faolan looked at Gem squarely in the face, giving her a hard stare revealing no trace of his barely controlled fury. Yet when he spoke, it was with deceptive calmness, which is far more dangerous a tone than any amount of yelling. “Gem, I think you better tell us what you did, before things get any worse. I don’t want to remain this way forever. What was in that water?”
Gem considered, feigning innocence, which wasn’t at all hard to do as a cub. “Oh, it’s just FOY water. It was a gift from my cousin. There’s too much for me to drink by myself.”
“Just what is FOY water?” Isaac demanded.
Faolan caught on, knowing the nature of Gem’s naughty little trick. “Fountain of Youth water,” he explained. “This is what make whoever comes in direct contact with it magically younger. Too much of this stuff would make you regress all the way back to your cub years, which I think is exactly the case.” Fao looked around the room, which had now became magically restored, although still dark. He glared at the little red squirrel who led them into this trap. “Gem, you are in deeper trouble than you ever believe. If our families find out about this, we won’t be able to get out of grounding for the whole fifteen years we regressed. If we do get out of this, you and I will have a long talk about this situation. But unless and until we do, we will have to figure out how to get out of here.”
Yes, the room had changed, as did the whole daycare building. Where there was only a desolate room full of packaged boxes of toys and furniture, there was now a completed playroom, looking neat and tidy, with everything put away in proper order. Suddenly, the light came to life.
“Whoa! Did we just…go back in time or something?” Isaac asked.
Thadix gasped, then shook his head. “No, we didn’t go back in time. The daycare…it went forward in time instead! The curse still exists! Yet it was more versatile than anyone even though. Not even the magic agency’s experts fully understood the nature of this curse!”
“You mean…we are trapped?” Tanya mewed softly, suddenly frightened.
Thardix nodded. “Yes, until we solve this problem. This time, I’m afraid, the curse will not let us go without solving the riddle that will be our only means of escape. Walking out of the daycare center won’t solve anything. We must find another way out.”
Faolan pondered this while studying the current room, considering possibilities, weighing the consequences of his decision. There were three main doors, each opening to a different hall leading off to another area of the building. After a moment, he said, “Let’s split up. We will have to explore in three groups, each consisting of two or three individuals.” He pointed at the door they entered through, on the left. “Gem, Natalie, Tanya, take that door. Find out if there are anything we can use to defend ourselves long enough to escape.” He pointed to another door on the right. “Thardix, Isaac, you two take that one and learn what you can about this place.” Finally, he pointed to the middle door. “Akylu and I will take this one. Meet here in an hour.”
So the adventure begins....
