So I made this tail a couple of weeks ago, so that I'd have something to wear to a local furmeet. And now I finally have something more true to my species! I've been so lazy about making cool stuff just for myself, haha. Figured I'd better toss it up here and show you :)
So yeah, this tail was a bit of an experiment. I left it mostly un-stuffed to try and avoid the "butt pillow" effect. It still doesn't curve and move the way I was hoping it would, though. I actually shaped it by thread sculpting on the upper half. This prevents it from collapsing and going flat :D It also has a bit of black paint detailing; a tail tip and a precaudal gland spot.
It's made to-scale with my human body, so it's smaller than a lot of fursuit tails. It's not meant to be worn with a partial or anything, just by itself. Although it could have done with a little extra length, I was limited by the scrap of the fur I had available. It was this really nice stuff that was probably lining the hood of a jacket at one point in its life. It looks like real fur, even up close! This is all there was though D:

Sorry, but it was just a scrap I found at a thrift shop! Most likely came off of a jacket hood. I love random finds like that!!
I always have an eye out for useful materials. When I can, I buy them up so I can have a stockpile. Comes in very handy later down the line :D

This is great!
I once read somewhere, the idea of using the tip of an ice-fishing pole to give a tail some progressive springiness, where the tip moves more than the base for a more animated, realistic look. It was something I was reading while looking at the prospect of making yarn tails.

Ah yes! I think that would look lovely.
Unfortunately, my tail's problem comes from the limitations of using fur fabric, instead of fibres such as yarn. A yarn tail has a central core, and the rest is flexible fluff. But with my tail here, it's a hollow shell of fabric - the fabric likes to warp and it prevents the realistic motion.
I tried to make a yarn tail once... it looked like a dog toy went through a dryer
