So, this is what happens when you compost two years of chicken manure and table scraps, and mix it into some regular, crappy soil. I had an absolute explosion in my garden this year, which both thrilled and overwhelmed me very quickly. The tomatoes ended up a tangled, huge mess. . . but thankfully, the basil stayed nice and clumped. If HUGE.
This is to scale. I put it on the picnic table so there'd be some frame of reference. The plant is over three feet tall, and it smells AMAZING. I have two other plants exactly like it, and I now have more basil than I know what to do with. And that's saying something, because I love basil, and use it in absolutely everything. But ohmygodthere'sjustsomuchofit!
I gave some to the neighbors, gave some to mom, and I'm hanging and drying the rest. And making some soup tonight, with fresh basil and parsley. . . like I have every other night for the last month :P

hehe you should of seen the rhubarb at my ol house it was so big and so much off one plant you couldn't tell it was by looking he, it looked like a medium bush or camo tent XD XD , sadly when we transported it to the new house in one piece XD (lot of careful digging ) the chickens got to it and ate it XD O.o even though its poison to them , (though there to stupid to realise XD )
Gotta love smell of basil. That'd need to be a parfume.
I remember my mother making strawberryfield (a teeny one) on old compostland, it went insane and kept flowering from spring to early winter, there was still craptons of flowers, berries and runners when it was already snowing daily.

No attack of the Japanese Beetles? My family grew basil when we lived in Bryn Maar outside Philadelphia PA and we were always up to our eyeballs in the pesky things and we often had to harvest the basil early just to keep it from being mauled by the damn beetles.
We did have the best pesto though and it does freeze quite well (for use during the winter). I definitely think that would be one thing for you to do with your excess basil that will keep well.

Basil has a minty overtone - and as such is great with fruit. It is also great to make ice cream (kind of like green tea ice cream, but fresher...add some tahitian vanilla!)
And if you have a butch blender - make pesto...and a little water...and just keep blending until you get basil foam. It's heavenly on chicken, fish...sandwiches.
Considering the price of basil in some places (a sin, really)...you are LUCKY! </jealous>

Woo nice! That's so huge! Great work on the compost mix to get it to something the basil obviously liked. Tomatoes are weird - I found coffee grinds actually work best for fertilizing them (but don't use grinds for other stuff). You'll have to post some pics of the tasty dishes you whip up with this. ^_^
With all the rain we had here in southern Georgia, my herb garden really took off. I have rosemary that is at least four and a half feet tall. And I could literally share it for a month and still be swamped with it. Your basil looks awesome. I grow basil as well and it always gets huge for me. About three feet tall and two feet wide.
Basil will grow until you let it flower then it will become woody and stop growing and pump out seeds instead. If you pinch the blossoms off, it will keep growing. Mine are about 4 feet high and put out massive leaves. I'm going to have to strip and dry what is left soon before the leaves start to yellow.
I usually let it seed out from the end of august through october when the frost kills it. In november I burn the woody parts in my fire pit and it smells really awesome.

My basil did really well this year too. I also grew some greek globe basil but it wasn't as good as the greek column style basil I grew last years that tasted a bit like allspice!
Every grown Thai basil? They put put purple and pink flowers that the bees goes nuts for and smell amazing! I have in the last couple years and it is really great in asian dishes! It also smells like sweet licorice! I can't describe the taste though, its something kind of otherworldly and you can even eat the flowers if you want. Best used in Thai or Indian dishes along side its sweet basil cousin. Sadly it cannot survive northern winters where I live, but the sweet basil seeds will resprout for me and aside from the 4 plants I put in, 5 more came up alongside them XD
