Seven years ago today...my hero as a child, passed away.
Seven years ago today Steve Irwin was killed in a freak accident by a sting ray, of all creatures. A sting ray.
I spent many a morning watching him, learning about amazing animals from him. He was whacky and a bit eccentric, but that's part of the reason why I loved the guy. His passion for the animals. For animal conservation was palpable.
I have a large crocodile stuffed animal I got the same year that he passed away made of super soft short fur. I have affectionately named him Steve, he rests on my bed at my side every night.
It had been a dream of mine, to someday meet this man and visit his zoo. That dream was shattered that heartbreaking morning I woke up to find out my hero had died.
You may be gone, Steve. But you are FAR from forgotten. You've helped so many animals, inspired so many to do the same.
Rest in Peace, Steve. We miss you.

I loved Steve. He was an amazing fellow, and very informative. He wasn't afraid to do what needed to be done to show not only how dangerous an animal was, but to show off its behaviors. To some, he was antagonistic of said animals, and to those I say fah. He did it all in the name of education, and he wasn't as tormenting of the animals as the nay sayers said he was. He knew when to back off. Steve is still missed, and I remember drawing a crocodile character immediately after hearing the news of his death. Thanks for this reminder of his very important contribution to zoology and education. *hugs*

Well said and I was sad that day too. I didn't have cable TV growing up but whenever I was at a friends or visiting relatives i would sit for hours watching animal planet and he was indeed one of my favorites. His energy and passion were things that can never be found again probably in our lifetime. His legacy lives on though through the actions of others and through his children.
Rest in Peace Steve Irwin. You'll always be remembered in many a mind and live on in the hearts of your ever loyal fans.

Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait....what? Seriously? This happened?
A bunch of people went on a rampage to kill stingrays....TO FIND THE ONE THAT KILLED STEVE?! As if that stingray's wearing gang colors and telling everyone "Yeah I killed that man, yo."
.....I'm appalled by the stupidity of some people.

The point wasn't that they found it. It's that they went after it to begin with. It's a StingRay. Not a human being with the ability to use logic and reason. Yes, someone was killed by it, but the stingray isn't some criminal. It was an animal, doing what an animal does, in the animal's habitat.
Again, people are moronic. To even have that though initially was moronic, to go after the ray was moronic. Just because they found it doesn't make it any less moronic. Just makes me feel bad for the animal.

As stated (didn't think that such a piece would stir up some drama) it was nothing more then a freak accident. The ray got startled, felt threatened, and did what animals do when they feel threatened...it defended itself. Nothing more, nothing less. Just because that was what killed Steve doesn't mean we should hate rays, they're still beautiful animals.
I miss him so much. As a kid I used to turn on animal planet and squall with excitement if he was on the TV. I would actually take the remote from my parents just to watch it. Everything he did I'd try to do in my own ways. He's part of the reason I am the way I am today. May he rest peacefully.
it was kind of awkward the day he died and we turned on "modern news events" for our history class. our teacher shared the same name, so we all got a morbid look to the teacher when that announcement played. i occasionally look back and wonder and hope his kids and the widowed missus are all doing well still. recall the one child wanted to go into veterinary stuff just to feel bonds with her dad still :o (something brave for her to wanna work same field like that. i would be too pained myself. ^^")
very touching and nice piece bud :)

I feel the EXACT same way. In fact, the day it happened, my brother told me and I was upstairs on the computer. I didn't believe him and kept saying over and over he wasn't until I finally looked it up (I was afraid to) and it was true. I lost it. He was my HERO. I wanted to be just like him and was, at the time, looking for colleges so that one day I could work at the same zoo as a vet.
He is still very missed. RIP Steve. You were inspirational.

Its rather ironic I was just thinking of him the other day and how much I miss him. I never watched his show or anything, but I always watched whenever he was on one of those late night talk shows. He was funny, always in high spirit, and I loved the various animals he'd bring. Good Journey Steve Erwin. Until the next world.
I loved Steve too, so so so damn much. I was disappointed for the same reasons you are, but his daughter and wife carried on his legacy and I'm sure he'd be damn proud of them <3 I still want to visit his zoo one day. I hope you get to, or have and get to again~ RIP Steve. RIP.

i miss him, i remember when i woke up that morning, i was walking to the kitchen when i heard my grandma shout "oh my god!" i ran in and asked what was wrong, as grandma said it the news did too. at first it didn't register, then it hit me like a train. i remember falling to my knees as a tear welled up, then all i remember was crying for the rest of the day. you did him good with this.
