It's my experience that if you're submitting pencil-shaded work for publication in a black and white venue, you have it photostatted. This costs a few bucks but most print shops can do it handily, and it guarantees that your black and white work will print better. All of the heavy graphite-in-alcohol paintings that I did for the 'Revar' short stories had to be photostatted.
