Second set of revamped portraits of characters in
's novel The Afflicted. He commissioned me a good three years ago for sketch portraits of these exact characters (they're far back in this gallery), and now that he's finally finishing this book I offered to do updated ones, just because!
Also, I think I can finally admit to myself that I really, really like anthropomorphizing cat faces.
Done with ballpoints on Aquabee heavy sketch paper. 9x12 Characters and setting belong to the client,
and rights to the art are jointly owned by myself and the client.

... All right, I've been thinking about a calm, mature, professional way to put this without devolving into incoherent gushing, but I just can't think of one. I LOVE these ones. I LOVE them, and I just ... can't put it any other way than that, I'm sorry. LOVE.
Jonthan is perfect. 100% perfect. He looks old and maybe a little grizzled, but still formal, dignified, upright ... not just because of the shirt, but his posture and that serious look on his face, it just commands respect. Which is PERFECT for his character, oh my God.
And Scout! That was another character whose personality description I gave you was kind of a jumble of things, but you sorted it all out and managed to come up with a sort of half-playful, half-sincere look that can encompass all of them. He is friendly, considerate, selfless, just nice overall, even timid to the point of mildly phobic of speaking in front of groups, and will meekly back down if he's threatened, but also fiercely loyal and protective of his friends, and suddenly bold, even downright wrathful and fatally aggressive when *his friends* are threatened. Whichever side of him I think about, though, this same picture works for it.
In conclusion, I love these.
