I usually start out with a flat silhouette too, and then gradually add depth and detail to it. Just try simple structures and compositions at first, like I said. If you're still having trouble figuring out the designs or other things, look at a few reference photographs ( or paintings ) for guidance.
I think my favorite part of the whole piece would have to be how the light comes down from the leaves of the tree, it looks beautiful to me.
How is it working with Painter by the way?
Also the foliage on yours looks beautiful. I personally think you did a nice job. Architecture I think is the bane of my existence.

Thanks! Painter is fine, once you get used to how everything works, same as with any other major graphics editing software. Why do you ask? I'm sure there's an official demo, if you'd like to try it.
And architecture is tough, since you actually have to pay attention to perspective, due to all the straight/angular shapes.

I haven't really had much experience with other programs outside of Photoshop, considering it's the only one I have at my disposal, so I was asking out of curiosity honestly. I will look into it though to try the demo at least. Thanks for answering my question though!
Yeah that I understand, I'm not that great with it either.

Photoshop is pretty powerful and versatile, so you don't really need another program, if you like using PS. That said, I still recommend you try a few others, such as Painter, ArtRage or Sketchbook. Can be fun and quite inspiring to try out new art software, and maybe you'll find out that you prefer some of them to PS, at least for certain types of work.
I did try Sai for a while, but it really wasn't for me. At the moment I'm just trying to replicate some more of a "painterly" style to my work and trying to figure out how to make my shading look solid rather than being soft. I've been doing a couple of speed paints here and there to try and force myself to look more at shadows and how light works in certain areas. Figure drawing right now is kicking my butt, 6 hours once a week in one sitting with individual studies on the side, it's burning me out a little bit.
