Mainstream or not it's a sorta nerdy thing to do, being caught up in fantasy I'd think is the main reason. Even COD players are at it all day in a non-existent place just blasting each other. You've got to know the specs of the game and enjoy what you're doing, which is sort of the definition of nerdy.
