A ref-sketch means i'm using a real life photo as a basic reference to a certain pose. Mostly I use refs to get the idea of how a top / bottom of the body will look at a certian position and make out the rest of it depending on what i'm aiming for in mind.
I really should be using more refs for my drawings, seeing as 90% of them are no-refs derp. And it shows coz the posses are exactly 100% correct or as dynamic as they could be. But i'm a lazy artist, what do :|

I get the same way, I need a ref pic for a pose to get it looking good.
Without i get lost on what to do with the limbs, especially when i don't have a plan in mind and just doodling letting it happen.
However with an ref, i can get pretty good i like to think.
For a long time I refused to use a ref, feeling guilty for having to steal a pose or idea. But then after learning that is how you learn to do exactly that without a ref, i changed my mind, lol
