Actually, your guess is quite close to the mark. This is a character I run in an RPG (Spycraft). He *is*, by profession, a P.I. He had been on the staff of a major international engineering firm, and got fired for attempting to blow the whistle on a major internal scandal. This started a long downward spiral, bottoming out when he was about an hour from committing suicide, when a freelance agency (one that itself had had hard times, recently) hired him.

Jan is now a member of a team called The First Circle (Jan's a big Dante fan), and more or less functions as their clew-finder, analyst, and back of pair of fists.

Nah. I thought it was pretty obvious, me. Well, not the WHOLE story, but he does have this... yes. Very P.I. feel to him.
