In the 80s, Citadel and then Ral Partha sold blister packs of three miniatures - representing a character at low, intermediate, and high levels. I keep coming back to this because I think it's an interesting design idea. Here's a human wizard on his path from traveling thaumaturge to experienced spell-slinger to elderly magical powerhouse.

He looks like he starts at middle-aged, goes to elderly, then more elderly.
It's like 40-50-70.
When I was young, I did the most elaborate, energy-intensive cheatingness with powers mankind wasn't meant to toy with. Today, I nudge. Older doesn't make you more powerful. If anything, being older means you have less energy, less ability to recover and heal.
If I were to draw this picture, it would have the "young" wizard blasting about, willy-nilly, and the older wizard appearing to do nothing.

I'm sure that for every magician who does the Ged thing where they think everything through a little before opening up, there's at least one who acts like Sofi in Howl's Moving Castle, where the idea is, yeah, what's the worst that can happen, dying and missing out on those all-important 10 years of arthritis?
Lol not if it's the character my dad made in that story he was writing with my sister XD Had the guy as a freaking like 500 year old dual-class Rogue 20, Monk 21, Cleric 22, Wizard 23. Was the infamous pirate Red Beard who ended up repenting and was gifted with not dying of old age by a deity. He could basically walk up behind you in Time Stop, end the spell, punch through your spine six times for x5 sneak attack each, and then resurrect you to continue your punishment for offending his god. But nowadays he just pretends to be an old wizard, who secretly watches over the Heir to the elven throne of the other continent.
