Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. He's still pretty cool though based on what I've seen. I'm not quite sure about how this character was created so I can't assume anything myself, but I do have to admit that I have characters subconsciously based off of my favorite official characters as well just like a lot of other artists, I'm sure, heh heh.
Yeh. I guess it's pretty common, my sis does the same thing, usually after getting a new game or anime, an tries getting me to draw characters she creates based around the characters she likes, or makes a female counter part to the male character in the anime or story she writes based around the same settings of the anime. You at least changed things around to make it your own character, my sis more or less just changes the characters gender. That or she tries incorporating the anime into her real life some how.
