I don't know who the illustrator was, but he/she did some wonders using some very simple lines that often illustrated a fairly dark and lush landscape by casting the shadows first rather than starting with the landing of light
and then sometimes he/she drew some creepy crawly critters that look a lot like your super cute and organic creations!
