This was the first but not the last time Ruralite gave me the job of illustrating an item on fishing. I get the impression that everyone over a certain age at that time must have gone fishing for fun. It's a pasttime nowhere near as popular as it once was, I guess. But I had fun, at least, drawing a stereotyped fisherman, all kitted out for salmon the size of a VW bus, but taking glee in landing a minnow too small for pizza topping.

I don't recall when I last went went fishing but it's been years - maybe it was that ill-fated FishCon that some of us went on after SDCC that time - on a boat with fifty other folks. I caught all of one fish (a small tuna which I gave to another in our group). The main things I recall were the harbor seals cleaning the bait and fish off the lines, seeing the boundary between the US and Mexico, lush green on one side, a dead brown on the other, and watching a drunk who'd spent the whole trip soaking pick up a drawing someone (Gabriel Gentile IIRC) had done of Red Shetland, gazing dully at it for a moment and then taking a big bite out of the drawing. Oh Lawd, everyone's a critic...
