That's a fantastic, well thought-out question! Surprisingly, the answer is actually no.
There ARE different breeds of dragons. Nathan (dark blue) and Clyve (orange) are great-horned dragons - so named for obvious reasons. While Shen is a river dragon. However, Shen and Clyve are brothers. Great-horned dragons are a little less common because the gene that makes one is recessive.
The frills are really just personal appearance and are - for these two species, at least - not practical.
The key differences between them are A: the horns (obviously), B: the wing thumbs. There are other dragons that look SIGNIFICANTLY different (like the Eastern-style sky dragons or the diminutive faerie dragons), but those are the main differences here.
