Gareth isn't normally this big. In fact, he's usually pretty small. Right around 5'10", 105 lb. Just an undersized air mage, really.

A unique property of air magic is that you can channel lightning through your own body and, given enough expertise, you can store it in your body. Which not only looks cool what with all the lightning sparks coming from you, it allows you to release all of the lightning at once. So essentially, charging a lightning bolt.

Gareth has always been weaker in this than other air mages, which is odd given his unnatural skill in air magic. He suddenly got the theory that one can store more energy with more body mass. So to test this, he enlisted the help of a life mage to cast a growth spell on him, making him some 12 feet tall and over two tons of dense, powerful muscle. Really more powerful of an effect than Gareth asked for, but he proceeded with the experiment anyway.

Sure enough he was right. And at the moment, he's considering making the size increase a permanent deal due to this discovery... And for other reasons as well, of course.
