I just unwatched an artist on Deviantart I've been watching for years because all he ever sends me in my inbox is Pony bullshit. This has happened a few times over the years and it really seems like a disease. They catch the "Bronie" and it takes over their entire life. Its pretty sad really.
I'm not sure how serious this is, but it made me giggle a little!
I've known people who fell off the face of the Earth because of WoW or something similar. The thing is though, when people get a new creative interest they don't disappear; they're more productive than ever before, but it's up to you to see it. Or not, of course, that's also a valid recourse. :D

Not always the case. At least not in the "productive" sense that you're thinking of. They're producing lots of fun for themselves, but not necessarily in the form of artwork. Their fun may now be 30 hours of leveling a Tauren Druid every week instead of 30 hours of art. :)
Heh! I'm not sure if the 'selling it' is a true validation factor though. I can only speak with certainty for myself, but I suspect most people just do what they want, and don't go beyond that.. doing it due to the popularity of the content would be impossible to sustain anyway, and it would show in the art. No excuses necessary, any art is valid art!
Every time I see a case of it I feel like I have to watch and, no matter how hard I try, can't do anything about it... I don't deliberately look for it but I seem to run into it again and again -..-
I'm aware that this is the artists business and the changed one probably isn't “suffering” like in this pic... but it just wont work somehow, I get that feeling of “one more had to go” every time... it would help if I at least knew a change isn't permanent but that's almost never said... and from past experience a change usually DID mean it was permanent...

It will die eventually though, fandoms rise, reach their apex, then collapse. Never completely though. Eventually MLP fandom will be reduced to a cult following and nothing more, lets hop it comes soon. I am growing sick of all the pony art that poisons the art community.
