Before I start the flood of artwork today I figured I'd post a couple pictures.
Caught this guy in my mom's yard yesterday. He was buzzing around in the pine tree trying to find a spot to land, and he ended up just dropping down in the grass. So I picked him up and he let me hold him long enough for my mom to snap a few pics with her phone. He flew back into the tree after. I love cicadas, their wings look like faerie wings. :D

They're really awesome. When I was a kid, I remember when the cicadas came out. I'd collect the shed skins, and since they were that durable and cool-looking, I used them as weird aliens for my Star Wars figures to interact with. It wasn't until a lot later that I realized not every place had 'em and they didn't come out on a regular basis.
Personally I've always found large insects intimidating. As a kid I was deathly afraid of things as small as wasps and bees while in my early teens I was startled by anything that buzzed or had six to eight legs. Nowadays I'm fine with most arthropods, except for the REALLY large ones (i.e. bird eating spiders) or the kind that can potentially kill or infect me with something potentially life-threatening, primarily ticks. Also ants can be really annoying.
Generally I like or at least tolerate most bugs - if they can sting (bees are the exception) or bite and it's gonna cause serious harm, they will be smashed though, or at least flailed at until they go away. I loathe roaches, I'm okay with ants (cuz at least they have *some* predictability to them and they don't shit all over your house if you have them), and most spiders are welcome (again, unless they have the potential to cause real damage should they bite me...those spiders will either be smashed or escorted outside). I have a little jumping spider that lives in my window and eats flies, he's adorable. (Flies are also smooshed without hesitation. lol)
I don't mind most spiders (primarily the deadly ones, but I live in northern and western Europe depending on the time of the year so little chance of encountering those), except my girlfriend has serious arachnophobia. She can't stand being in a room with one that's maybe only about a centimeter long or even less. I've never actually been stung by a wasp or bee and as far as I know I'm not allergic to them.
Mind you there are some arthropods I find pleasant and downright awesome: like the praying mantis and the scorpion. Those things, in my humble opinion, are perfectly designed predators, so you can't help but admire them.
As for flies; smashy-smashy. I've been looking for Venus flytraps forever to act as natural flypaper.
Sadly we don't have cicadas in Finland. Their singing is lovely.

I was at a con once, and the noise outside my hotel window was amazingly loud! I remarked to my roommate about the noise, thru closed windows...and then got up to take a look out the window. The window wasn't closed (the curtains hid this) and clinging to the curtain were two cicadas! No wonder they were so loud, they were in the Room! I caught them both and put them outside. Shutting the window brought a sudden quiet that was funny at the time.
Also, regarding above: Cicadas usually live under ground most their young (larval/pupal) life and emerge in their pupa state (see below) and then shed their exoskeleton (you can see them stuck like ghostly shells on trees, grass and other surfaces) and become adults which is when they'll start buzzing to find mates (only males buzz). I believe they last about a month or two at max (at least they do here)? The cicadas here start to buzz just before the start of the monsoon (June) and usually are quiet again by September. I live in Phoenix, Arizona, though I know there are different species of Cicadas in other parts of the state.
Also, just for the creepiness factor, here's a pupal state Cicada I accidentally dug up when doing some gardening.. He was NOT happy.: http://i1158.photobucket.com/albums.....ps3bfd8ae9.jpg
And then what the adults here look like, pretty similar: http://i1158.photobucket.com/albums.....pseb006e83.jpg

I used to live in Phoenix. :) Never managed to spot one but I heard them ALL the time. lol
I was in Kansas during the summer one time and was lucky enough to find one that had just shed, it's body was still bright green and its wings were ghostly white, it was beautiful. Like a living jewel. :)

Oh neat! Small world, lol. :) They're always all over in the trees at my parent's place, that's how I see/catch and release them all the time, usually for picture taking purposes. XD
I've seen a shedding one here too, but that was when I was really little. Looked about the same as you described. It was so cool! ^^ I watched until it had fully dried off and flew away, it really was a miraculous sight to see. <3

A few years ago I caught a caterpillar and was fortunate enough to be around when it emerged from its chrysalis. I held it on my hand the whole time it was stretching and drying its wings. Then it pooped on me and flew away. lol Was still cool to watch though. >u<
Lol! Awww, nature is amazing isn't it? :'D I've never actually gotten to watch a butterfly emerge, but it sounds pretty neat. ^_^ What I have done though is rescue countless little critters and creepy-crawlies (including tarantulas) on my camping trips and adventures. :) I also have a thing I do where if I catch a (friendly/non harmful) bug, it goes straight onto my face... Yes, I put bugs on my face and take pictures of them that way too. XDDD My family photo albums have quite a few pic of me with critters on my face or in my hair or something odd like that. :P I am a proud nature-freak. ^^ I love to be out in nature's beauty and capture just a little bit of it on my camera to remember it by. <333
You'd be happy hanging out with me and
, we're the same way. She likes to catch the snails in her yard and put them all over her arms to freak the neighbors out. lol And then, one time we were doing a livestream together, and her husband found a toad and we both RAN out of the room squeeling to go play with it. People in our stream were like, "uh...where'd they go?" lol I love critters too, especially the creepy crawlies. Lizards, frogs/toads, bugs, rats...all of em'. :D

LOL, you both sound exactly like the kind of people I'd hang out with, omg. XDDD I LOVE snails and I actually wish I could own one of these guys (Giant African Land Snail) as a pet: http://i3.asn.im/Giant-Snail-_ts7q.jpg ...but unfortunately they're illegal to own in the U.S. DX
I also have a collection of these, thought I'd share: http://i1158.photobucket.com/albums.....psf5892cc9.jpg
Lmao! If I had been there during the livestream I'd have gone running off with you. I guarantee it. I'd have been like TOOOOOAAAD!!! *Flails* 8DDDD
I used to own a tomato frog (named Zucchini), a tiger salamander (Sally, lol), some geckos (Frida and Fud) and I've encountered so many different creepy crawlies/critters I can't even name 'em all. I go camping a lot and unlike most girls I actually get excited over "gross" things and try to educate people about different misunderstood creatures. :D I'd love to share more pics of critters if you'd like? We can swap stories of awesomeness. O: Though probably through notes since I don't want to clutter up your comments more than I already have. ^_^;;

Omg those snails are adorable!
I had a White's Tree Frog (aka Dumpy Frog) for a little while but he died only about 4 months after I got him, not really sure why. He was tiny and cute and he felt like a sticky hand and one time he jumped on my face and it felt wierd but I liked it. lol
Yeah sure, we can swap critter stories, I check notes pretty often though it may take me a bit to respond sometimes. :)
