I'd like to think Aleu wandered off and got lost. Then Steele, who was living in the wild due to being unable to show his face in town, found her and decided to protect her until morning, when he could guide her back to Nome. Even though Steele was a bit of a douche, I don't think he's really evil; at one point he did go crazy, but I think that was mainly due to the fact that he just had a mental collapse. I'm sure he would be more than willing to protect a puppy.
