If memory serves, the three (burial) mounds represent the three tribes of the Three Fires Confederacy (Ojibwa, Odawa and Potawatomi), who named the park around the museum Ah-Nab-Awen, or "Resting Place" (there used to be a village there, and they have a powwow at the park every year).
