"The cat watched the water drip between the cracks of the dirty faux-wood cabinet, catching on splotches of struggling mold as it made its way to the linoleum floor. He was surprised that water still came from the faucet. The cat had been living in the crumbling kitchen for weeks now and the clogged and filthy sink still drip-drip-dripped metallic smelling water over the edge of the counter and spread in a greyish-brown pool beneath it. He preferred to catch the water before it hit the ground, pressing his rough tongue against the smooth surface of the cabinet door, feeling the luke-warm liquid slip down his throat. When he first took shelter in the abandoned house, he had greedily lapped up water from the stagnant pool and spent a full day and night sick in a corner, throwing up what precious morsels of food he had been able to scrounge out of the buildings already ravaged by other hungry animals."
