I just watched the newer series, and I must say I agree and disagree with some of the changes. Most of the disagrees are in how they handled what key points to drop from the redone episodes that were in the original series. The other thing I am sad about is not enough time with Mari. I guess I have this thing for crazy girls who make it look normal, lol. biggest complaint is the wait for the last episode. I will be back home in the land of non internet when it comes out (if it comes out), and will probably not get to see it. That being said I had to do a lot of hunting to find both the songs that Mari is singing in the new series, as I know I had heard them before. Both are early 70's semi enka songs. one is called the 365 day march, and is taught to kids in school usually ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOvVb0z6HcE ), and the other is called I'm not alone, and was by an idol of the early 70's Amachi Mari, who kindof started the whole modern idol thing. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9G2IxrGzSc ) Funny she has Mari as her name too. I really wanted mp3's of these, but couldn't find them, unless I wanted to buy a whole album on vinyl. I lack a converter that does a god job od mp3 to mp3. Oh well, enjoy.

Yeah I do think that some of the dropped points made the pacing a bit... off. But then I guess you can't do much about that when a series is being shortened to movie length. I wanted more Mari screentime too, she ended up replacing Asuka as my favorite. (I love the crazy ones too obviously) It'll probably be a good while before the last one comes out with subs in decent quality. I feel pretty impatient too, especially since it looks like it will be a lot different plotwise.
For the songs I don't know what to suggest aside from maybe ripping them from the video? It's a shame there isn't a more complete soundtrack out, there are some really gorgeous songs.
