I think I encountered these while on a caving trip in West Virginia. They are in danger of becoming extinct due to an infection known as white nose syndrome. It is spread from people thinking they are cute, and then picking them up to pet them, which increases the spread of the disease. Not from cavers who religiously bleach their gear after every visit, and do not touch anything while in the cave.
