The grue and their misguided champion Daerth are not subjecting their captives to pointless torture for the sake of breeding more infertile grue. They seek a way for their kind to become true-breeding, and as such a true race, deserving of acknowledgment. The Teleya is, in that respect, their Holy Grail.
A Teleya, like a Grue, is the result of a successful breeding of a Cuhaul and a Coera. Where there is a 1 in 100 chance for such a union to produce a Grue, the odds of it producing a Teleya are closer to 1 in one million, if not more. Teleya are effectively Grue, but with a few very important differences. They are albino, lacking any sort of pigment. As such they are wave-deaf, unable to produce the ultrasonic vibrations in their ear-waves for silent communication or deadly harmonization (although they can hear normally.) They lack the Grue's naturally foul disposition (Teleya is an archaic word that means "pure one".) But most importantly, they can bear the offspring of the normally sterile Grue.
In the entire history of crossbreeding Cuhaul and Coera, only one Teleya has ever been documented, and it died nearly 3000 years ago. Convinced he must create his own, Daerth has set up his genetic breeding program to increase the odds of producing one. But in the far north....
