$18 Full 'Color' commission for Ce-e-vel of deviantArt http://ce-e-vel.deviantart.com/ of probably the most touching concept I'm ever going to have to draw. I might not be taking commissions, but I wasn't going to say 'no' to this.
The image is of his sister Cydra as the goddess Durga. The message on this coin is intended to be the following:
Front: Inside of God there is something feminine.
Back: Inside of everything feminine, there is something divine.
Durga is a powerful, inspirational Hindu goddess, one of the few amongst many a pantheon of male gods worldwide. She is strength and beauty and truly divine, just like his sister that is represented here. While most of the symbolism is to standard Durga representation, the bowl with the two oranges is more closely inspired by St. Agatha. One of the saints whose story involves the removal of her breasts. Having Durga be his sister really does reflect that strength and the symbolism as it takes a strong and spirited individual such as herself to fight the battle against breast cancer for too many a year. I believe both of us were hoping that at least the illustration, and maybe if things went well the coin would have been completed before her passing, but she lost the battle over the weekend.
Image was one of the quicker ones, about a week due to the practice on the first three dwarven coin illustrations which helped with how to do the lines, shading and such. Drawing wise, I'm not sure how the end result will be received since this is obviously a very tough time for the commissioner. My only lament is I hope I captured her beautiful smile that and I wish she could have seen it.
