Well, he was already a bit of a spiv, and getting humiliated by his King, and then sacked, probably turned him against the Crown, and seeing what kind of a deal he could get from the Grand Duke. There were allusions in the story that there was going to be a puppet-type ruler of the United Cities, at least the part the Grand Duchy hadn't annexed. Think Seyss-Inquart or Laval.
