Might be because when the mind is experiencing depression, on any level, it slows down many of the brain's decision making centers, hence the piece will take longer to complete. I have also read that the mind is less preoccupied with daily activities, allowing more focus on anything that could remove the depression from the system. In this case, one of the artist's favorite pastimes is drawing, so the brain puts more power towards cheering itself up.
At least, this is what I have read and heard from my mom. (She works with Hands and Voices, a deaf and hard of hearing support association, so she deals with depressed and frightened people all the time)

World of the silence.
The song of the sea come in ears.
Moment of kiss between darkness and light.
The mind moving in the rhythm of the waves.
Look at the sky, listen the land.
Moment to peace, moment to think.
Time seems to stop.
Feel fire in the beach.
Silence and feel this moment my friend.
Soul and heart together with light and dark.
Is for you, Thanshuhai, I love this draw, I remember some good moment, thanks.

Words can't even express my love for this piece.
The beach has always been a sort of sanctuary for me. It's a place to be alone and reflect on many aspects of life... a safe haven where no one can hurt you, or make you feel sad or depressed. Just you, the sand, the sun and the water. I go there often alone at sunset to watch our fiery star drift into the sea, knowing each passing day will yield another.
Best of luck in all of your endeavors, and thanks a ton for sharing your art.

This image is just amazing, every time I look at it I feel exactly like he does, staring in to his eyes for what feels like forever. Instantly calm as if looking at myself, just staring in to the distance. When I look at him I see myself exactly how I would like to be, your description of him in the reference sheet is like a description of me I could not of possibly thought of, although still accurately describes me. I cannot emphasize this feeling no matter how long this comment could possibly be.
