10 x 14 color pencil and a bit of Pitt brush pen
Sorry guys about the repost, needed to show the difference between the new scanned and properly resized version and the photos I have to take otherwise :/ I will put old version in scraps.
A speed paint for me. (anything less than a week, sketch to finish)
IIiieeee! I'm a pumpkin! Though I signed it Sunday night I've been picking on it till just now. Could pick on it for weeks! Must. Stop. Now!
Trying to get more adventurous with lighting.
Critique or suggestions welcome.
NOTE: Thanks to earlier critique, I corrected some anatomy issues. My thanks to those who pointed them out. Unfortunately, this scan was done before correction.
This piece sold at the AC art show :)
Started out as just a pin-up but evolved into something a little more complex. outlined a short story to go with it. Why can't I ever do things the easy way?
A star-fighter pilot, she has been lost deep underground for months after a high velocity impact drives her ship kilometers into the alien planet...
She nears the surface just before sunrise, the sky is still dark, covered by heavily ladened clouds. She is fatigued, near delirious and basically climbing the ancient volcanic vent on auto pilot when a thunderclap brings her to herself. She realizes she is surrounded by a dim grey light unlike the bioluminescence that had been guiding her way for so long. She now feels the cooler, fresher air ,(There had almost always been a strong air current but it had been warm, damp, unpleasant.) Still not daring to hope she had reached the surface, for she had had her hopes dashed before, she pulls herself up to peer over the edge of the opening. Before her eyes could adjust to the light and distant focal length, the orange sun that had just now crept above the horizon, broke through a gap in the clouds....

I will start here for it's the easiest to respond to. But first I want to thank you for the time you spent on the critique and pointers you have given, for they are and will continue to be, more helpful than you know.
The story that goes with this piece is one of pure survival and finding within oneself the will to keep fighting against all odds.
The protagonist is depicted as a genetically engineered wolf but could be almost any species for the story to work although there are a few elements that could be added to enhance the story due to her nature.
Star fighters and many other smaller vestals are equipped with flash stasis fields. This device serves a couple purposes. One is obvious, to deflect incoming weapons and protect the the ship during brief duration impacts. It is very good at it but can operate for only a few seconds at a time before it has to recharge. Its main purpose though was not to benefit the pilot but as a safety device to protect inhabited worlds from inadvertent
high-G impacts that would and had a number of times, caused catastrophic loss of life. The FSFs don't prevent the impacts but allows the ship to penetrate the surface of a planet and release its kinetic energy gradually into the planets crust rather than all at once on the surface. Damage from its passing is still horrific but only a fraction of what it would be otherwise and many lives have been spared since its inception.
Even though theoretically, a pilot could survive such an impact no attempt had ever been made for it was deemed to be an impossible task especially on hostile planets during war time.
In this case, the protagonists ship penetrates deep, but just before FSF shut down, it breaks through into a massive underground cavern which was just a part of a network of such that once had been magma flows.
She evacuates the ship with what supplies she can carry just before it is completely buried by the still collapsing roof. It's an alien world within an alien world inhabited by creatures of magnificent bioluminescence and of darkness that feed on the creatures of light...and anything else they come across. There is water and nourishment in great supply at time but other times...
Her only guide out is the "flow". The currents of air and water that were almost always present.
I think that covers that so over the next couple days I'll tackle the big one and give you my perspective of writing, art and such.
And thank you for your nice comment about my poem, it was something I enjoyed doing very much. And I dug out the sequel and dusted it off. It's about 80% along but I need to figure out how to tie some elements together at the end.
