"Excuse me, but may I stay here till the rain stops?"
"No problem, my friend. I wasn't expecting any customers today, anyway. What brought you to this town? Have you come to sell your wares?"
"No, I came here to deliver a message to the governor, but the guards of gwana(1) refused to let me in. They told me that he isn't in his office today."
"Ah, thats because the wonnim went to Iksonggol to organize the repair the bursted dam there."
"Iksonggol? That village in the upstream of Tanpyeong village?"
"You are right. You know about Tanpyeong? My son lives there."
"Your son?"
"Well, actually he was my older brother's son, but after that plague dozen years ago left him orphaned, I raised him. Alas, it seems that Samsin Halmi(2) decided not to gift me and my wife with child so he essentially bacame my own son. Why? Did something happen in the village?"
".... I am afraid so, mister. I was heading to the town of Unjin to restock my baggage from the guild, but I got stuck in Tanpyeong as heavy rain washed out the bridge.
And yesterday, when the rain stopped for a while, all the young men in the village gathered to where the bridge was and began rebuilding it despite the concerns of the village elders. Then there was that flashflood. No one survived. That is why I, despite being an outsider, had to come here to deliver the message.
My.... My deepest condolences."
1) - The building that the gate/pavillion in the background belongs to. Governor's office basically, but also functioned as governor's residence, courthouse, police office, and regional millitary headquarter(during war time).
2) - 삼신할미, Old Lady Samsin, a deity governing the area of childbirth and infants in Korean shamanism. Simply speaking, stork equivalent of Korea.
I just wanted to draw something Korean themed after seeing one of the lastest postings by another Korean on FA. I have no idea why I drew a raining scene despite the fact that where I live now is bone dry in summer, or why I wrote that nonsensical blabbering up there. The place names are all fictional.
