It's actually called molting and the clumps of fur that are clinging to him are called wool. He is getting rid of his winter coat so he doesn't get too hot in the summer.

You are of course correct; please forgive my use of casual terms; my friends and I, regardless of an animals's reason for losing fur, be it the loss of a winter coat or simple daily loss of fur, tend to call it shedding, even though it's not always the proper word.

I have a dog that molts like that and I find it kind of amusing that she won't let me get the loose clumps of fur off.

he looks happy. males do tend to be bigger than females, but from the picture i can't tell the actual size of the wolf.

Truth be told, I was there and I couldn't even tell you the actual size... I was distracted by all of them XD

With the exception of the puppies, all of the wolves were extremely laid back around me, though the folks working there were conserned about my glasses and hat.

they love hats, bags, camera straps :P whenever im in with 2-6mo olds I tend to end up with a black eye form a paw bop

OMG! You are so licky! That is the number 1 thing I want to do on my bucket list!. He is so big and beautiful, judging from the grey fur on this big wolfs muzzle, I'd say he is farely old.

@ I think you're right about that, maybe the big fella has grown out of noming on rand things.

I've gotten to pet wolves too big fluffy friends, the most pure blood wolves are actually quite small compared to what most people think they're really closer to the size of a husky or german shepherd, the bigger ones are generally mixed with malamute or other big dogs, and the big wolves you see in movies and shows like game of thrones are actually supposed to be the prehistoric ancestors to wolves which are direwolves. Also another thing if anyone else goes to a place to pet wolves or other large wild canines refrain from any strong fragrances one lady in our tour ignored that rule and put on some cheap strong perfume and almost lost finger because she wouldn't listen to the people or the wolves warnings
