Thank you very much for your comment! The contrast is mostly due to making the darkest darks... well... as dark as they can go! Or at least dark enough to cause the lightest lights to pop. I guess it all just boils down to knowing where to place your darkest darks to create the most impact.

I was just trying to take a photo of her, she always has this guilty look. This came out perfect!
