[Old art from August 2012]
So here is something I've never posted! =) I wasn't planning to post anything of this series until it was finished, but it never was and it ended up being lost in my art folder while I was busy with college.
The basic idea was that I wanted to practice character design with the theme of, "What if the good species in Redwall were evil, and vice versa?" I was planning to do a huge character line-up with the switched good and evil species, with coloring too, but I never ended up finishing.
I'll admit that it's a bit disheartening looking at this. I drew it almost a year ago and don't see any improvement in my artwork between now and then. I know I was busy with college and life, but still, it kind of hurts to see that. I'm working hard to change that now, though!
There are others in this series that I've made, but I'll hold off on posting them for now. You'll see them soon enough, though! =) I probably will re-attempt doing this series again in the future too!

Don't beat yourself up about your lack of progress. From what I understand, you didn't have much time to practice drawing anyway. You're still one of my favorite artists. I have no doubt that when you get back into the swing of things, you'll find yourself steadily improving as you did before.
One of the main complaints I've heard from people about Redwall is "Why are rats/foxes/weasels/etc. always evil?" The late Brian Jacques took traditional European folk views towards different animals and applied them towards a person's inner character. If a character was evil inside, then they got to be "vermin". There's another species personality that each has, like foxes are sly, rats are corrupt, and they generally act accordingly in the books with few exceptions.
That being said, I'm curious where this idea of yours came from as I'm sure you already knew most of this. I'm also curious what these swapped versions of good and evil characters would act like if not their archetypical selves. Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing you or trying to be a purist to the Redwall lore. I think this is an interesting idea and I can't wait to see more.

Awww, thanks so much! I'm happy to hear I'm one of your favorite artists. =) I'm trying hard not to get down on myself over it, because you're right, I had more important things to focus on. I just wish I had the creative energy to do both at the time!
Yeah I've heard that complaint too. Personally I don't mind it so much. I think most of the people complaining are kind of reading into the classification too much, and making the topic out to something that it's not. I wouldn't be surprised if Jacques chose for it to be that way so his younger readers could more easily make out which characters were protagonists and which characters were antagonists. There were occasional exceptions over the course of the series, but that's just my guess, anyway!
Unfortunately I can't remember where the idea came from haha. I just remember wanting to practice character design and I thought this could be a fun way to do it. As far as traits go, I was imagining that maybe these species that were swapped between good and evil would have their traits spun into a negative or positive light. For example, I've heard that otters can be territorial at times, so maybe that could be used in a negative way for a story. For badgers, maybe they could be ill-tempered? Or for foxes, they could be charismatic instead of being sly? There's a lot of possibilities. =)
