“I’m not afraid…”
There was a twinge of doubt in his voice, an uncertainty even he couldn’t ignore that betrayed him. His words had no semblance to them, no significance, no strength; no meaning. He was striving in futility to convince himself that, for the first time in his life, he could stand on his own two feet – when, to the rest of the world, he was a baby learning to walk. He couldn’t be resolute without quaking, even when the one he loved was going to die in front of him.
But Lynn wouldn’t run.
He couldn’t run.
He looked to Doran for his strength, and all he saw was horror, his guardian’s face slumped in failure; there was no turning back anymore, no saving just one of them. He thought he had made the ultimate sacrifice, giving his child the chance for a better life, and now…it was all squandered. He was bound in chains, powerless without his Law, powerless to help as his pride and joy was crushed in front of his very eyes. He had lost all hope. Lynn, in all his good intentions, had committed to die with him. But death was for the lucky. When they were done with him, Lynn would live in endless agony, and Doran would be forced to watch every moment.
And as the tears began to well in his eyes, his despair did nothing but inspire Lynn to act.
“I can’t be afraid,” he said, tempering his voice.
Now, there was a reason to fight, a life worth fighting for, and a hope worth proving. He would take it all by force if he had to. He clenched his little fists and took his stand, full of rage as he locked eyes with the demon.
“I won’t be afraid!”
…
…And as Lynn’s eyes went wide, staring certain death brazenly in the face, something changed within him. His words…resonated. They captivated him in the silent, trailing echoes. This all too familiar feeling sent shivers down his spine, gripping him as his mind struggled to comprehend the thought with a blank, questioning stare. But this wasn’t the same as before; it was not terror in his eyes, but understanding, as if he had found the truth…as if he had known it all along. He searched his soul in silence for answers, breath held in suspense, and found nothing but peace, like a light in the darkness – flickering, but defiant.
And like a ripple breaking on the water’s edge, so too did the chains binding his timid heart shatter under the weight of his words. In that moment of silence and confusion, he was overcome. He felt how small and powerless he was, how weak and insignificant he would always be, when the whole world towered over him. There was no light to guide him, nor a hand to pull him up from the abyss of despair beneath his trembling feet. He stood alone in the darkness – truly alone – fighting an overwhelming, insurmountable terror poised to swallow his every hope.
But Lynn wouldn’t run.
He couldn’t run.
Every instinct he had screamed at him, begging him to run, yet something held him firm, something greater than any doubt. When he snapped back to reality, his eyes quivered as he felt something torn from him by force, leaving behind a familiar, unshakeable feeling of loss. But there was no pain, nor horror, nor dread. In his heart, he knew what he had lost. He had abandoned a weakness that cut deeper than any wound. Without it, he finally understood what it meant to be brave, as if all along he had lived in fear of the truth.
That single act of courage changed him. He finally trusted his own words, inspired by the power he never knew they were capable of. Reason flooded his mind, determination coursed through his veins, and pride swelled in his heart. His vision was unerring. He stood against his demons now, glaring up at his foe with determination in his eyes. He faced certain death, and not a shred of fear glimmered within him. Against all odds, he struck his fear to the ground and shattered it.
He was not, could not, would not be afraid; suddenly, even he believed it. Suddenly, he was ready to believe.
