Believe it or not, many designers of the '50s claimed the high tailfins helped stability at higher speeds. While they were purely aesthetic for an America that couldn't get enough of the burgeoning jet aircraft technology and design, it was the beginning of designers looking to aerodynamics in creating cars.
To me, the 1958 Plymouth Fury is the only Chrysler Corporation car that improved in the looks department compared to the 1957 redesign. The comparable Chrysler 300 and Dodge Royal Lancer somewhat tarted up an already clean design.
