Hunt beetles on the island between 7PM and 9PM. The rare ones appear on the palm trees constantly! I make apx. 1,000,000 bells per night just by hunting beetles and going back and forth between town to sell them. I've gone so far as to cut down the trees in the center of the island to increase the spawn rate of rare beetles on the beach trees. And of course, I sell them all for 20% more thanks to the Bell Boom ordinance in effect.

Elephant, Atlas, and Goliath beetles all go for 8,000 and the Hercules and Golden Stag beetles for for 12,000! Oh and make sure to carry a fishing rod with you for the occasional shark.

Not for too much longer. I have 6 expansions left and apx. 4 million bells in the bank; enough to pay them all off in as many days.
