During my trip in St. Augustine, I came across a Greek Orthodox shrine along St. George Street. I never even realized it was there, but decided to go inside for a look once I noticed it.
The Saint Photios Greek Orthodox Shrine was built in 1749 and restore in 1979 and currently owned by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America. It's dedicated to the memory of the 400 greeks who arrived in St. Augustine in 1768, gathered supplies, then headed south to New Smyrna to settle a new colony. After ten hard years, the settlers sought refuge in St. Augustine, and gathered in the Avero house for worship. This was the first permanent settlement of Greeks on this continent, and their influence can be seen still in St. Augustine.
I'm not a religious person, but it's not hard to see how some can be captivated by religion, walking in to this shrine and seeing the detailed art put into representing their beliefs.
