Some info but not much on this one.... It's an E-One light duty rescue on a Ford Super Duty, with 70,000 miles on it. I spoke with the owners mother. He recently purchased it at auction from VFD on the Maine coast, and they in turn purchased it from a Florida FD.
This truck is immaculate, I cried when I heard that the new owner planned on scrapping the body (literally) and turning this beauty into a dump truck.
It's sad that a piece of fire apparatus with so much life still left in it being torn apart like that.
UPDATE : 7/10/13
After speaking with me and being badgered by his mother the owner of the truck contacted a used fire apparatus dealer. The dealer told him what the market value of the truck should be (about 15k more then he paid), so the owner has listed the truck with the apparatus dealer.

Well he's a small contractor and his dump truck is not long for the world.... So he thinks this is a great idea... change bodies and get back to making money...... SO maybe not so much of an idiot as a person with a rather focused thought process.
p.s.
When I spoke with his mother, she said she was trying to talk him into keeping the truck whole. She also stated that his brother who is returning to from a deployment to the litterbox was trying to talk him into keeping it intact as well.

just seems odd, f350 is what i have as a welding rig and empty iam almost 10,000 pounds and it has a gvwr of 11,400 so unless hes going to haul around 4 bags of dirt.... it will be easy to go over weight, so DOT and him might wind up being good friends. I do hope he either sells the body or donates it. cause small contractors... *bites tounge*
Well around here it's called CVE (commercial vehicle enforcement), and they're a sworn and armed unit of the state police. They really don't mess with the small stuff. If you don't need a class B or A license to drive it, chances are they won't stop it.
Funny story I had to call CVE in when I stopped a local guy one day. He refused to believe he was doing anything wrong and told me that because he was a commercial driver, he only had to listen to Fed DOT and CVE. He thought because he was rated to drive doubles and tipples that meant he could drive a full sized 4 door 3/4 ton pick-up towing a 30 something foot camper with a trailer hitch welded on the rear and a full sized car on a car dolly behind that.
He was sadly miss informed and CVE told him that he owed me a thank you. I saw him in a parking lot and didn't allow him to leave. If I had witnessed operation of the Frankenstein rig he was driving the fines would have been over 1k. Instead he got a free lesson and all he had to do was remove the tow dolly and car, and take them back to his home.
I guess I'm just showing my age but I grew up around 1 ton dumps and I still see them every day, and they are really a non issue.

Ask Panzier about towing a bull dozer with his F-350 aka the White Whale, out of my driveway and the truck had no issues getting back to Mass safely.

And sadly, depending on which page the officer turns, its either a class D or a class A vehicle, the phrase at home is 'for commercial purposes' Now California has a way around that, they have a noncommercial class A license, bastids. Before leaving California I checked with Mass S.P. and was informed if it was my stuff, weight (mcgvw) didn't matter. I was going to lean heavily on the reciprocity card if anything happened on my trip east. Sadly, 9/11 happened on my departure day so I boogied as fast as a 260k mil 4.9 inline 6 gas engine would haul 24,500 pounds of stuff.

The work 350 I have is a 2004 and its sad. Think the motor is a briggs and stratton. Smallest gas engine you can put in it. I litterally got out of my seat to stand of the gas going up hills in PA when loaded to go to ohio. Oh!!! Yeah going after small. Commerical trucks is the new thing now. See more and more pulled over since their putting 5 th wheels on them and hauling lie tracktor trailers. Well hopefully guy sell the body cause I does loook nice. Be better to see it used as a service rig
