i love movie siren noises, they come in such an assortment
i also love that in anime whenever there's an explosion you can always catch a faint air raid siren mixed into the tail end of the noise. just such a cultural sound association, so cool to me.

i actually posted about this on my dumblr but there's a few factors in play here
1) this is a mindscape, not a dreamscape, but even as such
2) ash (like all mites) is an accomplished lucid dreamer and can take some control over how he appears, even though it's not "his" mindscape
3) even mite females don't look like human females, physiologically speaking, all the time. they really only develop visible chesticles during certain parts of their reproductive cycle. y'know, like most normal mammals :B
4) extreme shock can cause the body to abandon/delay part of that cycle due to greater risk/need to heal itself.

that...actually pleases me a lot more to know than you might think, ahaha. i mean it's one thing to just cruise through the words and on to the next page, god knows i tend to when i'm reading printed comics. but it...really feels good to know some people are taking time to let their eyes walk around the art and layout :>c
i've always really tried to figure out perspective in backgrounds. for the msot part this page is cheating cause it's just a solid wall every time. but yeah i was like obsessed with the concept of the vanishing point when i was in elementary school and infuriated/confounded by trying to make ponds look right when drawing them in middleschool. i guess my obsession managed to morph into some rudimentary understanding, hahaha
it really does help. if you really only have characters on one layer (so to speak, even though i'm not using photoshop) and backgrounds behind them at all times, there's not only no real sense of depth of field but there's also no real way for the scene to feel like anything but a staged shadowbox. if you have items/people/scenery in front of the characters at times, it has more of a sense of actual enviroment. it feels less like paper dolls sorta dancing across a backdrop y'know?
heh well there's another page (maybe two more, depends how the dialogue seems to flow when i get down to it this week) of this before a scene change, and we'll be back two more times through this arc.
and it's intended to be a grey area. i confess after ten years i still really enjoy watching peoples' minds melt when they can't fit ash into one of two (very human) gender boxes.
