I find it sad how today's society is so unloving. I wish we could go back to where laying under a tree at midnight was an amazing date, not spending as much as you can to get laid.

Very biting message here, and it's one that I've tackled in a few of my own pieces.
Love isn't the only word that's become meaningless. A few other words have also stepped onto the euphemism treadmill.
The word "friend" now means the same thing that "casual acquaintance" used to (thanks FAILbook)
The word "respect" now means the same thing that "common courtesy" used to (thanks "EXPECT RESPECT" campaign)
"Love" is now a synonym for "urgent lust" and/or "temporary infatuation".
Of course, many of these things are Teaching MomentsĀ® for crusty older folk like me. For example: long, hard experience has taught me that the more that someone harps on and on about not being trusted, the less they deserve that trust they so crave. Likewise, the more that someone "expects respect", the less they seem to actually deserve it.
Likewise, certain common phrases are always lies. For example:
(1) Would I lie to you? - (You just did.)
(2) He/She means nothing to me! - (Yeah, right!)
(3) Maybe we should just be friends - (Not bloody likely when you've already found yourself a new partner.)
(4) No offense, but... (But what you're about to say is actually grossly offensive)

I actually heard these a lot back when I was younger (like i'm that old anyway) but I've come to realize that many people referred to as "friends" are nothing to you. I don't really have many friends, but you'll be able to tell when I consider you a friend, because I'll cherish my friends and do anything within my power to help them at any cost. sadly, that's caused me to be taken advantage of many times in the past.
