Sample of all the little thumbnail heraldric pieces I'd do, about 6 to a 3x5 blank card while at work ages ago during telephone work. I've a bunch more, but oddly can't find -all- the major cities of Pavar - most of the rest of the pieces were those of small fiefdoms and independent towns. Notably missing are Delstinius and Inculos.
Those of most of the eastern and southern portions of the map were of much lower priority at the time, though there's a few exceptions that got done.
Chalice Shows a cup of the city's namesake, and represents the caldera of the dormant volcano the city's nestled inside, with a shallow, but serviceable bay at the center. Blue represents the seaport aspect of the city, grey symbolizes the Gray Robes - the school of wizardry the city is known for (Battle/Intelligence mages), the three stars represent the city's government - a King, a Governor, and the City Council.
The sword on the left represents the city's army, while the one on the right, the city guard.
Rathead Pronounced 'rath-eed' by local folks, and Rat-Head by everyone else - (after all, there's rats right on the shield) is a satellite town usually controlled by Horvath. A history of plagues of rats and disease, and raids by vicious 'rat men', the Squeka Pok from the nearby mountains, give the town an often sinister reputation, though the folks are decent enough.
SifOne of the fishing towns north of Inculos, nominally independent, but in recent years, willing to pay tribute to that city in order not to be caught up in the next potential war. Occasionally Zenthris sways Sif to its side, but its distance makes long term protection from Inculos tricky at best.
HorvathOnce claimant and capital to the entire continent, grand and ancient Horvath is but a shadow of its former self. Its nobility has gotten too lazy, too powerful, and its kings are becoming increasingly feebleminded, or distanced from the day to day politics of their neighbors. Regardless, Horvath still has a huge standing army, and technically 'granted' many of the other citystates their initial autonomy ages ago, with the 'understanding' that they remained loyal to the 'High Crown'.
Annalonde The only known Esari city on land - most of the other 'sea ermine' reside in titanic white sailing ships or floating cities that follow the world's tradewinds and ocean currents. Annalonde is rarely seen by human eyes, and even the Miyen (felines) and the Horet (jackalfolk) are only rarely allowed entry to the city, which requires the crew be blindfolded and an Esari sortie to guide the ship in through a series of coral reefs grown specifically to prevent direct assault on the city. Inland, sheer cliff walls and a dense tangled forest, enchanted to defy normal means of navigation, protect the silver, gold, crystal and alabaster towers and vast, baroque gardens of the city.
Despite its secrecy, Annalonde is a trading port and though it rarely gets involved with the politics of the mainlanders, the sea ermines do honor their alliance commitments.
Imverod The Mage Isle, Wizard Home, City of the Robes, Imverod stands, as far as most of the residents of Pavar are concerned, at the furthest edge of the world. Anyone with a talent for magic that wishes to master the art, save perhaps the orders of the Gray or Purple Robes, tries eventually to reach Imverod, and get admitted to the university there - mandatory before any of the great Mages will even take an apprenticeship.
Its said even the lowliest baker or bricklayer in inverod knows -some- magic, even if just a single simple cantrip.
The colors of the shield of Imverod represents each of the Great Orders of Wizardry
Black Robes - Philosophy: Magic used for Personal Gain and Achievement. No branch of wizardly knowledge is forbidden to their order, though this is done grudgingly by the others. Make no mistake, the Black Robes are staunch allies to the other orders, and aren't necessarily 'evil'. They're just more likely to be a touch more arrogant and manipulative than most members of the other orders, and dislike being sidelined into 'quests' and 'crusades'.
White Robes - Philosophy: Magic used for the Greater Good, Acknowledging the Divine (without favoring any particular god or goddess).
Blue Robes - Philosophy: Subtlety. Use the least amount of magic for the greatest effect.
Red Robes - Philosophy: Magical Permanency, Breadth of Knowledge. Also the primary Articifers of the orders, though all six orders do craft magical artifacts.
Silver Robes - Philosophy: Intrinsic Magical Studies - Widest variety of inherently magical species indoctrinated into any of the orders. Esari, Arborni, even Miyen and Horet are commonly members. Its rumored that several shapeshifters, and perhaps even a dragon or two, in hiding, are also members.
Gold Robes - Philosophy: Breadth and Depths of Utter Mastery. Membership of the order requires a minimum of 3 whole schools of magic to be taken to near completion (Just short of the maximum level). Gold are considered the most conservative, where the Silver are the most experimental of the orders.
Renuf A small crossroads town near Lez, east of Zenthris. Its importance as a wagon repair and warehousing town gives it a fair amount of wealth, enough to usually team up with Lez to become the 'sixth' citystate of western Pavar, strong enough to make the other five take notice and adjust their plans.
ZenthrisZenthris boasts the most militant culture of the citystates, and was founded by a mercenary army comprised mostly of minotaurs, or Pretarn as the locals call their race. A Human and Minotaur Senate runs the day to day government, managing the city, while a Minotaur Warlord and his sons, all given the title of Prince, run the armies and deal with foreign relations in the field.
Nem Capital of the Horet, a heavily magically invested people resembling anthro jackals. While not having their own 'order' of magic like Imverod, Chalice or Inculos, many do travel to Imverod and have managed to, at one time or another, have members in all of the Great Orders.
ParnamanathylaxisCapital city and largest concentration of the Miyen people, a black furred feline race from the Isle of Parna. After the Esari, the Miyen are considered the best sailors in the realm of Pavar, and their merchant ships are a common sight in near all of the major seaports in Pavar. While not known for its magical alumni, Parnamanathylaxis does boast a strong knowledgebase in magic that comes from the psyche, mind, or ego - eg, Mentalism, Psionics, or Charisma based wizardry, which some wags say suit the self centered and vain Miyen perfectly.
Raven Isle A small but prosperous island kingdom in the Tol Tinharoth island chain. Initially a dukedom granted by Horvath, it has long since severed its ties to the mainland. Duke Normund of Raven Isle, while descended from one of the greatest dragon slayers in Pavar's history, is rumored to have sired several half dragons after his wife turned out to be dragon in disguise. The whereabouts of his children is presently unknown.
