I know Ponderosa won't allow it unless you pay when you first come in (which not only means you're tipping them BEFORE the service, but also means your waiter/waitress isn't getting your tip, it's getting put into a tip bank that every waiter gets at the end of the day.)

Couple other places do too. It promotes 'unfair competition', supposedly.

I know those policies. Blech. I always just slip my server some cash and a wink while nobody's looking. ;)

The one where I used to live was so bad that the other waitresses would turn you in over that. Manager came out and actually told a guy that he wasn't allowed to tip a waitress personally. Other waitress apparently went and told the manager. That two or three dollar tip split three or four ways really must have been important.

Kinda funny if they lose a customer over such an incident :)

I was working retail, the sort of place that will often have a tip jar on the counter, since it deals with tourists who have a lot of liquid cash. I actually got in trouble a few times because I went out of my way to help little old people with their things (since they often want things off the top shelves, and cannot easily reach said things) and they decided to give me a tip. Ironically, they've never explained -why- there, it's just policy, they don't pretend it promotes anything, and honestly if they could legally get away with it I'm sure they would justify it as "it gives us less control over your income"

I've never seen anyone ever give tips in australia, except to taxi drivers, i always tip them, i think it's just because in general we're better paid than you guys.
And i really am of the opinion that nobody below the age of like, 18 should be working, and if they are, they shouldn't get paid less, it just encourages companies to hire heaps of younger people, because they can work them just as hard and pay them less.
I hated school, but i think it's hard enough doing it without working afternoons as well!

Exactly. The laws are here so weird. You can be old enough to work, but not old enough to vote or drink or fuck- three things that are quintessential to most societies. I really dislike the way we go about proclaiming we have the lowest unemployment rates, when the majority of those jobs suck and pay nothing.

Yeah! You don't want a low unemployment rate because everyone's gotta take two jobs to survive!

Don't forget that our Fearless Leader thinks that parents who work three jobs to get by are "uniquely American" and was grinning like an idiot when he said it. :p

I wholly agree. While I can only speak for the US, the education system completely falls short and the collegiate-level is even worse. It's...frightening, really.

She'd have a harder time in the UK. Tips are near impossible to come by. The only time Brits seem to pay is when it's included on the final bill. I'd definitely tip her though :)

I can't say the government doesn't give us anything. We do get student loans for university and the amount is dictated by where you live and how much your family earns. The lower earning families get more support and if you live at the campus, you get more for living expenses.

Also, there is a system called the Educational Maintenance Allowance which is supposed to entice more people from less advantaged backgrounds into staying in full time education after they finish compulsory education (after studying GSCEs) at 16.

So yeah, she needs to come to the UK. I'd give her a place to stay for nothing. She can sleep in my bed... with me ;)

The worst tip I ever got was two cents. Some middle schoolers who thought they were funny.

Just the other week my friends nearly embarrassed me to death. We each had a $20 buck meal at a midrange restaurant. We got up to leave the table and I put down five bucks. I remember being a waiter so I try to help the rest of them out. They eyed that and decided I had tipped sufficiently for everyone and left. I had to run back and dish out the difference. >.>

Also, gotta love family restaurants with hula hoops for the busty employees. Tails looks like she does. =3
