When one is a military firearms collector, there are weapons on your dream collection list.
Sniper rifles are on many of these lists, especially German rifles from WW2.
This one has matching numbers, an original scope and mount, proper sniper buttplate, an original sling and clear optics.
Finally I can cross this rifle off my want list!
It is in 7.92x57mm also known as 8mm Mauser.

So, the interwar one. Mine (well, not actually mine, just the one that my character has) is the WWII No. 4 Mk I.
Almost depressing that so many military firearms today look and sound like toys, compared to what came before. For example, this video compares an AR-15 to a Moisin-Nagant M44. The difference is quite impressive, to say the least.
Then again, since Kalmbach is a naval officer, he would point out that any such guns would be irrelevant next to the USN 16"/Cal. 45 Mk. 7. =[^].[^]=
