Luther is just a strange client to Amon.
I'm not sure why anyone thinks it would be shocking to Amon ... Amon is a very seasoned whore. His every waking moment is spent thinking of ways of pleasing his clients, generally by degrading himself to fulfill their fantasies. He had to learn quickly, early on, to forget any and all dreams of a future of relaxation, self-indulgence or any sort of real freedom. He's seasoned enough that he doesn't need to think about not thinking about them ... we only see him truly bothered when he has to break in a new slave-whore, and he remembers having dreams and hopes and thoughts of escape himself once, and how powerful they are, and that has made him fill guilty over having to break those hopes and dreams out of someone new.
I'm thinking the thought of someone trying to resurrect a hint of those dreams, to stir Amon's own desires back to life is a genuine horror for Amon to face. He knows he could never escape, he has no future on his own, so why allow dreams and desires to live within himself over such unachievables as true love and romance, or freedom?

If Amon really felt that way, and regarded Luther in that fashion, he wouldn't have even ASKED for clarification--he'd have just accepted the situation as is, without questioning it or trying to understand the "method to his madness", so to speak. So it -is- my sincere belief that he regards him differently by this point (not necessarily saying he's in love with him, I think it's far too soon for that), and -would- find it jarring for him to say something "just like any other crass client would" after everything that's transpired so far.
Again ... just my two cents, and I'm perfectly capable of being wrong. This is, after all, Rukis' story, not mine. I'm merely speculating.

Luther is doing a bad job of not forming an emotional connection with his whores.
To all who think Amon would be offended at Luther calling him a whore - hell, I'm sure his clients call him worse when they're in the middle of the act. (Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if some of his clients weren't into smacking him around.)

You need to read Red Lantern from the beginning ... Amon was smacked around, and not just a little. He's been in physical decline since he was utterly shattered by the last one who broke his bones, and faces the daunting reality that his usefulness and future are ending as he is now past his prime.
I think Luther regrets the way things ended with the vulpine courtesan. Maybe he feels he can draw out the real Amon.
I forget if I asked Rukis this before, but ... it is possible Amon was never really gay, like Dhaval.

Umm... sailor... kinda surprised Luther has kept that sailor's tongue in check as much as he has... His shift in lifestyle, detailed in Rukis's wonderful novel, is no doubt most of that... but he does very good not calling Amon a whore more often... -especially- considering his history with the Fox...
Beyond the fact that it's a very harsh word to be coming from someone who has, until this point in the story, treated Amon very differently than what Amon is used to from his other clients (in the "I guess he's just like all the others after all" type of way) ... there's the more obvious and more serious fact that Amon isn't just a prostitute ... he's a SLAVE.
A "whore" has the free will to choose a new line of work, anytime they want to (such as what happened with Mikhail). The moment they don't want to be in the escort business anymore, they have the freedom to pursue a new career and change the direction of their lives. A slave CAN'T. Amon doesn't HAVE the choice to do anything different. If he rebels, if he defies, then he's dead or worse. To make light of his situation by calling him something as frivolous as "whore" isn't an insult to his profession, because Amon doesn't have one. He's MADE to serve, he doesn't CHOOSE to serve.
And THAT is why people are shaking their heads in disappointment at Luther right now, because it's pretty obvious how clueless he really is about Amon's situation, to so casually refer to him as a "whore". =/

Prediction: Luther says something he dosn't mean to say, amon takes offense and fights with me/ say he dosn't want to see or be around him again, something happens to either one of them to come back together, luther says sorry, epic fight or something, luther and amon are happy together again and amon is no longer a slave but a lover to luther.
thats my prediction, although rukis might have something else in mind

I think Amon is long used to abuse. He'll probably be hurt by it and act a bit stiffly, but does his best not to show it. He wouldn't expect that from Luthor (though he probably IS used to Luthor's extreme bluntness on occasion), and might let his hurt show for a second, but otherwise, he probably won't react much.
That last panel is just wonderful. I mean, sure, the whole book so far has been great (as the first one was), but Luther is there, looking casual because he didn't mean it to be the insult it sounds like. He's curious and wanting to understand Amon better, and proceeding to put both his footpaws in his muzzle.
But he looks so great doing it. The expression is very adorable with its ignorant innocence. (at least I assume that's what it is, though I might be being blinded by the cuteness.) And the scars in that last panel look amazing. They are very well illustrated and colored and look so much a part of who he has become.
Great job to the whole team on this page. As usual, it all comes together very well.

Yep. You just HAD to go and use the W word again, didn't you, Luther? Is your skull really that thick? *knocknocknock* Hellooo? Did your experience with Mikhail not teach you anything? Did Johannes not teach you proper respect? What would Lucius say of this behavior, this treatment, hmm? HMM?!
Heelers these days, I swear! *throws hands up in frustration!*

He's done it himself too, like in http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8164806/
But I guess it would be analogous to blacks using the N-word.

Blunt, yes. Mean-spirited, no.
Luther is being completely straight up about why he's paying Amon. He likes his company, regardless of whether kinky things happen or not. Amon gives him the sense of freedom one gets from being around others who are like them; in this case, being gay. That ever-present boundary that keeps him feeling at a distance from everyone else around him is gone and he feels a sense of comfort knowing that he is with someone who shares a very important aspect of his self-concept. I think most people on this site can relate to that in some way or another.
Amon /is/ a whore. Sure, that's a word that has very strong negative connotations, and he's being cruelly callous by using it, but Luther's just speaking frankly and finds the situation amusing. I don't get the sense that he sees himself as superior to Amon. And, I don't expect Amon to take it to heart - from what we've seen of him thus far, he doesn't seem to have much of an emotional attachment to Luther at all. He's just a client, albeit a peculiar one. And, Amon's had to deal with far worse in his time from other clients...
Maybe this is a little bit of a foot-in-mouth moment, but I wouldn't expect this to sour their relationship. I've been wrong before though!
Of course, beautiful as always, Rukis~

Oh, you couldn't have said it better!
I'm sure he didn't mean it this way in this particular scenario, but I do think he has some sort of obscure prejudice going on when it comes to prostitutes, if the latest novel is any indicative.
"Hmph. I'd never fall in love for a whore again!"

Haha I can't blame Amon for feeling suspicious towards Luther, especially given how long he's been in the trade and this is so unlike anything else.
...and come on Luther figure it out! Amon is into you (as in actually LIKES you as a non-client) so can you blame him for wanting a little something special?
