Something I just uncovered again... a design class assignment from 2005. The assignent instructions were to take an animal, contain it within a geometric shape, and make all the negative space (white, in this instance) touch, so that there are no 'islands' of negative space anywhere (this was so we could later cut the design out of a piece of acetate and 'print' with it).
