The plot is pretty big. Boy where do I begin? Okay, it's five hundred years in the future and humanity has a galactic empire called the UNSC with Earth as it's capital. Humans encounter an alliance of alien races known as the Covenant. The Covenant declares a genocidal war on humanity for a perceived insult to their Gods, known as the Forerunners.

The Forerunners are a supposedly extinct race of super advanced beings who left behind several empty ruined relicts. One of these relicts is a set of seven large space stations called the Halo Array. The Covenant believe that the Forerunners achieved godhood by activating the Halo Array and plan to do the same. But the humans find out that the Halos are actually giant super weapons that when activated, will kill all intelligent life in the galaxy. The Forerunners built these weapons as a last resort to use against the Flood.

The Flood is a super intelligent virus/parasite that wants to consume all life in the galaxy. It cannot be stopped. The Forerunners figure out that the only way to stop it was to starve it of it's food, that being all life.

You play as the Masterchief, who is a Spartan. The spartans are a class of super soldiers that were raised and trained from six years old to be warriors. Masterchief is more specifically a spartan II. Meaning he's from the second generation of spartans. There are four generations.

There, that's a basic, and I mean BASIC outline of the plot. Good luck working through that. :P
