This is Lawrence Jonahgold (because naming your characters after fruits = win).
He's a Returned, which means he was a soul that got rejected because he was a very nasty person when he was a human. He's been reincarnated as a Returned, and he's actually pretty far along in that whole "become a better person" thing. New Returned start out as basically skeletons, and have different traits for the sins they commited. As they start to redeem themselves (if they ever do- some have no interest in it) their bones are slowly covered in flesh.
He's not going to become human for a long while. He might get sent back to earth as a human later, to see if he actually learned his lesson and he can become what he was meant to be. And what he was meant to be was Something Better. Most humans are; some are meant to be great, and they Ascend and can travel through all realms, but very few ever become that. Some are Fallen, and they can do the same thing, but with a much different purpose (to go around killing and instilling fear, hatred, and ignorance into the human population in an attempt to breed more of their own).
Returned are different in appearence. Feathers and spines mean you're a murderer. The red colored ones are rapists; most others are pretty dull with darker patterns. Horns means you lied your way through life. Manes/fur or black scales mean you were overly prideful and callous to the needs of others. Hooves and extra limbs designate thieves. Blind Returned means you lied specifically to hurt others, and took pleasure in the pain of others. Being ethereal or incorporeal means you abandoned those who loved you. Loose scales mean you lacked compassion. (Others might come later, being that I am lazy.)
When they finally incarnate out of the realm of Returned, and back to earth as a human, they have one more shot at leading a good life. After that, the soul is considered worthless. Fallen will consume the blackened souls, but the ones who improved during their second human life become birds, and stay on earth to watch over the humans.
