How many of you remember what these are, let alone own one?
I was actually born just as people were getting rid of their record players. Cassettes had already been around quite awhile, and the invention of compact disks nearly made records extinct. I only vaguely remember my father having one when I was very young. So other than seeing one a few brief times as a kid I never really experienced owning one until I found a working record player in the garbage along with some records that were mostly classical music.

Hey, a compact stereo system. Guessing late '70s era. Nice looking one with the chrome plates and knobs on the front, and the wood cabinet. Yes, that turntable design is definitely from the 70s... say, like 1977, plus or minus? It's a BSR turntable. Also see there's an 8-track tape player (looks like it records, too, that's what the VU meters are for... yep, it does, I see the L and R microphone inputs on the far left). Does it have the rectangular gray transparent lid that covers the top?
Sounds about right. I was thinking early 80's but haven't looked to see yet. You seem like you know more than I do. Yeah it has the lid. That was the only piece of the stereo with damage. It has two large cracks that look like they were caused by something heavy being put on top of it.
It kind of needs it because it is the lowest part of the sterio due to its size and weight. The turntavle slides out like a DVD drive on a computer and the needle used to automatically go to the start of the record (for both 33 & 45rpm). that doesn't work anymore but it is possible to work aroud that with the fast foward and rewind buttons on the front of the unit.
